Mantilla comb, known as peina o peineta de mantilla in Spanish, in an essential accessory for the Spanish Holy Week, flamenco performances, weddings, coplas and other important events. The most valuable mantilla combs are those that are handcrafted. If they are 100% handmade, the cut, dye and lighting is carry out individually. In the past, mantilla combs were made of tortoiseshell (“carey”) but, nowadays, being the tortoise an animal under protection, it is no longer possible to use real tortoiseshell. The most look-alike material is called “acetate tortoiseshell”, whose composition makes it a quasi-perfect imitation. This material is very flexible, and has a beautiful and shiny finish. It is a material extremely hard to break or deform.
